Malta is a densely populated developed European microstate in the European Union. The island nation comprises an archipelago of seven islands situated in the Southern European areas of the Mediterranean sea. The islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate. Throughout its history, Malta’s location in the Mediterranean Sea has given it a strategic importance. Consequently, a sequence of powers including the Sicilians, Phoenicians, Romans, Fatimids, Knights of St John and British have all conquered Malta. The island is known for its world heritage sites, most prominently the Megalithic Temples which are the oldest free-standing structures on Earth. According to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island. Malta is also considered a potential location for the mythical lost island of Atlantis. Malta’s capital city is Valletta. The country’s official languages are Maltese and English, which replaced Italian in 1934.

What to do - Oslo, Norway
Author: Silke
It may sound strange, but Oslos highlights are mostly museums and science centres. I found myself surprised about the great implementation of innovative facilities that make Oslos museums a must-do for all kinds of travelers- including kids and people who usually dislike museum tours. The first two are relatively new attractions in Norway’s capital.
Nobel Peace Center
The Nobel Peace Center is one of Oslos relatively new attractions. It consists of an exciting combination of changing and permanent exhibitions highlighting topics like war, peace and conflict resolution - in Norway as well as abroad . The Peace Prize laureates are all presented in the Nobel Field comprised of 96 digital display screens set in a garden of 1000 fibre-optic lights. Don’t miss the magical book about Alfred Nobel, his life and work, the Electronic Wall Papers and the film room The Eye. Since the center opened in June 2005, the changing exhibitions, film presentations with digital communication and interactive installations as well as an arena for events attract many visitors.
Holocaust Center
The Center for Studies of Holocaust and Religious Minorities in Norway has two main fields of interest: the Holocaust on the one hand and religious minorities on the other. Within these two fields of interest the Center will contribute with new research, education and information activities, exhibitions and conferences. In August 2006, the center opened a permanent Holocaust exhibition with archives, library, etc. in Villa Grande on the Bygdøy peninsula. Villa Grande used to be the residence of the Norwegian collaborator and Nazi-leader, Vidkun Quisling, in WW2. Once a house of shame it is now - as a matter of historical irony - filled with activities in contrast to its former role.

Kon-Tiki Museum
As a recommendation for a family trip (or adults who usually dislike museums), this museum houses a range of boats and artefacts from Thor Heyerdahl’s expeditions. Here you can see the original Kon-Tiki raft (1947) with a 30 foot whale shark underneath, statues and a secret family cave from Easter Island (1956) as well as an exciting collection of archaeological finds from Easter Island, East Polynesia, Galapagos and Peru. Interactive touch screen facilities make it easy to explore the museum on your own pace.
Norwegian Museum of Culture and History (Norsk Folkemuseum)
One of Europe’s largest open-air museums. Here you find a variety of traditional houses from all over Norway. During the summer season lots of activities take place such as folk dancing, arts and crafts, shows etc. Several indoor exhibits with traditional handicraft items, folk costumes, furniture and church interiors. Activities for children: horse and carriage ride, visit the animals or an old fashioned candy store.
Holmenkollen Skimuseum and tower
The Ski Museum in Holmenkollen, the world’s oldest museum specialising in skis and the history of skiing, is situated in Holmenkollen ski jump - inside the actual jump, where visitors can experience the magnificent view of Oslo. It illustrates 4000 years of skiing history with rock carvings, skis from the time of the Vikings, and skis from all various parts of Norway that show local handicraft skills and traditions. You will also be able to see modern racing- and XC skis, as well as skis used by athletes throughout the last century. A brand new snow-board exhibition shows this new trend in skiing, keeping the museum up-to-date. Very recommendable!
City short info Vol. 3 - Dublin, Ireland
Author: SilkeDiscover Irelands capital with its gorgeous facades, the legendary Temple Bar Street and “St. Stephen’s Green”- the green heart of Dublin. Also for free: a time travel back to the Georgian Dublin. This distinctive style of architecture goes back to the 18th century and can be admired in the elegant streets of Merrion and Fitzwilliam Squares.
But let’s not just talk about the average Dublin experience you can read about elsewhere: My travel hints focus on more individual ways to explore the city! (Well okay, let’s not forget about some must-see’s and do’s here…)
What is Dublin famous for? The ultimate 3 to 1 countdown!
Number 3 - Colleges and Castles
I admit it sounds boring, but trust me: colleges, castles and museums have never been more interesting. The National Gallery for example gets recommended even by Dubliners. Some of them probably go there more often because 1) it’s for free and 2) the staff is talkative. Another reason to stop by is the location - right across Trinity College, Irelands oldest university (1592). The highlight here is the “Book of Kells”. The guided tour provides great insights into the history of the College. A must-do. Less famous but worth a visit is the “long room”, an impressive place for studying. Don’t miss out on it!
Like the header promises, Dublin has castles. The official online tourist office for Dublin mentions 6 important ones, and almost all of them get full marks (according to user ranking). So let’s just pick one that supports a great new feature: an iWalk tour. Download a Dublin podcast and visit “Malahide castle” using your iPod as your personal tour guide. Malahide Castle, set on 250 acres of park land in the pretty seaside town of Malahide, was both a fortress and a private home for nearly eight hundred years. The Talbot family lived here from 1185 to 1973, when the last Lord Talbot died. The beautiful Talbot Botanic Gardens are a must-see. They were created by Lord Milo Talbot and cover an area of 9ha total. Unusual is the combination of historic sites and punk rock concerts, but here in Malahide they take place, e.g. 16th and 30th June, when the Artic Monkeys or BellX1 will rock the site.
Talking about parks…
Number 2 - Parks & Lifestyle
What most tourists don’t know: Dublin provides quite a lot of green space! So do as the Dubliners and take an extended walk or a picnic at one of the parks. Two of the most attractive public gardens are St. Stephens Green and Phoenix Park. Fewer tourists but more local wildlife can be found at Blessington Street Basin, also referred to as “Dublins Secret Garden”. Park lovers can find this hidden spot a 10 min walk from O’Connell Street.
Another way to get in touch with real Dubliners is by visiting a market. If you are into fresh foods (organic), check out an Irish Farmers Market, e.g. at Leopardstown, Ranelagh, Malahide or Kilkenny (7-day-weekly) where you can also find fashion and craft stalls. Second-hand and antique goods, furniture, collectibles and so on are for sale at Blackrock Market. A very good opportunity to find a unique Dublin souvenir! For a more contemporary shopping experience, visit the famous shopping streets between Henry Street and O’ Connell Street and across the river to Grafton Street.
Dining plays a big role in the Dublin lifestyle. Located at the coast, Irelands capital is known for seafood such as smoked salmon or oysters. But as a cosmopolitan city, it offers all kinds of restaurants. Wherever you order, be prepared for big portions - and order a Guinness with it! And that’s THE keyword for the next to-do in Dublin:
Number 1 - Fun, Fun, Fun
Dublin is famous for its pub culture (not a secret, I know)! Did you know that you can choose between 1′000 pubs here? BUT: There’s no better place to get a taste of the local brews than where they are made. So stop by the Old Jameson Distillery and the Guinness Storehouse to find out about the production of the most popular national drinks. Of course you shouldn’t miss out on the original pub experience, because this is where the true Dublin happens. It is hard to decide for ONE pub to recommend, so I just follow the experts opinion and go for an award-winning one: the Cafe en Seine (40 Dawson Street) was the “Jameson/Georgina Campbell Pub of the Year 2003″. The Dublin Tourist Offices calls “one of the most spectacular bars in Europe, unique in both ambience and style, a must see!”. Well, I am convinced!
Although Dublin is a comparatively small city, there’s no lack of opportunities when it comes to nightlife and events! The unique mixture of cool bars, traditional pubs and vibrant clubs will make it easy for you to enjoy yourself, e.g. at the most recognized party area, Temple Bar. Dubliners are friendly, open-minded and love to mingle with the tourists for long chats. You will make new friends in an instant and find more than one reason to return to this exciting capital. Let me finish this post with a citation of Cosmopolitan, UK:
“One hour in Dublin and you’ll be high on the ‘craic’ – its explosive mixture of energy and warmth, music and style. Welcome to the melting pot of European Cultures.”
Spotlight on Iceland
Author: SilkeThe following text was part of my travel newsletter, week 25/2007. I introduce a different destination every week, so feel free to sign-up for the ones to come.
On Iceland, cosmopolitan flows meet traditional influences. When you first travel to Iceland, I recommend doing the traditional city tour through Reykjavik, the most northern capital of Europe. Colorful little houses and countless attractions such as “Hallgrims church”, the parliament, the city hall or an excursion to the nearby Grótta lightghouse easily fill the 2,5 hour bus ride with life.
Cultural highlights take place all through the year and are not to be missed. The midsummer night sun supports big “day-time events” such as the “Arctic Open Golf Tournament” (20-23 June) or the “Midsummer Night Marathon” at Lake Myvatn (22 June). The short nights are spent celebrating, and there is certainly no lack of opportunities to put on a good party! At the end of September for example, three events take place simultaneously: The RIFF (Reykjavik International Film Festival), the Jazz Festival and “Iceland Airwaves”, an Indie music festival.
To recharge your batteries again, one can visit the geothermic baths or a day spa like “Laugar Spa” in Reykjavik, where relaxation is guaranteed! Another highlight is a visit to the natural phenomenon “Blue Lagoon” with possibility to take a bath. On wednesday nights, you can enjoy the healing effect of the milky thermal water in the late evening hours. Geothermic energy is present everywhere, also at Hveragerdi, the greenhosue city where exotic flowers and fruit grow for the visitors enjoyment.
Recuperated like that, its time to get deeper into the real Iceland: on day trips like “Golden Circle”, you will see the island in its full-color splendor when visiting the Thingevellir national park. Here you find the famous geysers, the vulcanic crater “Kerid” and the stunning “Gullfoos Waterfalls”. The overwhelming beauty and power of nature is a sight to behold. More adventurous is the Thòrsmörk Valley (valley of the god Thor). Discover hidden paths known only by Iceland insiders. The trail crosses glacial rivers and allows unforgettable views on diverse vegetation located between three glaciers. Take sturdy shoes for this crazy trip!
Last but not least, there are two animal highlights when visiting Iceland:
1) A guided horseback ride on real “Iceland Ponys” (4-5 hours). Traveling back in time, you will cross lava fields and pass by old farm houses to get an insight of how life must have been on the country side in this rough but yet beautiful landscape. At the end of the tour, coffee and icelandic specialities will be served in such an old farm house.
2) A more leisurely but yet exciting experience is the popular whale watching tour starting from Reykjavik harbor: a catamaran takes you directly to Faxafloí Bay where you will soon be surrounded by whales and dolphins. Circling Lundey Island, you can observe “Atlantic Puffins” -also called ‘Lundi’- from a very short distance (until approx. August).
As you can see, Iceland offers a wide range of possibilities to spend an unforgettable vacation - not only for city hoppers, but also for more or less adventurous nature lovers.
“Njóttu ferðarinnar!” - Have a good trip!
How to get there:
Iceland Express, approx. 149 € per way plus tax e.g. from/to Frankfurt (Hahn)
Where to stay:
Hotel Reykjavik Centrum, an upper middle-class hotel located at the heart of Reykjavik and only a short walking distance from bars, museums, galleries,…
122 € per night/person incl. breakfast
Hotel Frón, middle-class hotel in the oldtown of Reykjavik. Walking distance to restaurants, cafés, shops and many interesting sights.
86 € per person/night incl. breakfast
These hotels are a recommendation of my partner for nordic vacations, Troll Tours.
City short info Vol. 2 - Barcelona, Spain
Author: Silke
Barely any architect in this world could have given a city a more distinctive character than Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926): facades like carved out of huge rocks, playful collages of broken tiles, Parc Güell and the incredible cathedral “Sagrada Familia“ - also known as “the most popular construction site of the world”. Barcelona can best be explored by walking down “La Rambla”, the famous boulevard connecting the harbour with “Plaza Catalunya”.For shopping, choose “Passeig Gràcia” instead.
Latest tips:
Mercat La Boqueria, north of Liceu. Probably the best market in Spain.
Check out restaurants and tapas bars at the Borne Quarter
(by the beautiful basilica “Santa Maria del Mar”)
Excursion to the beach town Sitges (30 min. by train): stylish and romantic, where art meets modernism - a taste of Cote d’Azur and Ibiza is in the air.
